Viperfish – Prehistoric sea predator
This deep-sea fish is not something you’d want to see during your vacation on the beach, that’s for sure!
The viperfish has a cool ability which allows it to appear luminous by will. It uses this skill to attract its prey, impaling small marine animals on its fangs. It can comfortably live in deep waters, more than 1km below the waterline, which is known as the bathypelagic zone.
It is also worth mentioning that the viperfish is a relatively small animal, only growing up to 60cm in length. It can go days without food and seems to hang motionless in water sometimes, waiting for prey animals. It has natural enemies in the shape of dolphins and sharks.
As creepy as it might look, you probably won’t encounter one in any of the common watery locations!
